Sony Corp. presentó el jueves un nuevo lector de libros electrónicos con luz incorporada y una pantalla sensible al tacto que le coloca un paso por delante de su competidor Amazon.com Inc. y su lector Kindle.
El nuevo PRS-700 es el tercer modelo del “Reader”, el lector de Sony, y se empezará a vender a finales de mes por un coste de 400 dólares. El aparato es el resultado de la nueva experimentación de los fabricantes para lograr que el lector de libros electrónicos sea un producto común en las estanterías de las tiendas.
Ni Sony ni Amazon han anunciado las cifras de venta de sus lectores.
Al igual que modelos anteriores y el Kindle, el PRS-700 tiene una pantalla de seis pulgadas de “tinta electrónica” que muestra el texto oscuro en un fondo más claro. La “tinta electrónica” no puede iluminarse por detrás, sin embargo el PRS-700 contiene diodos emisores de luz que se pueden encender para iluminar la pantalla desde ambos lados.
El aparato, que pesa 283 gramos (10 onzas), también incorpora un bolígrafo electrónico que permite subrayar el texto o tomar notas. Puede acumular 350 libros en su memoria y más en una tarjeta de memoria.
Lo que no contiene el PRS-700 es acceso en línea a la librería virtual de Amazon para descarga instantánea de libros. En lugar de eso, los libros se descargan a través de un ordenador.
Steve Haber, presidente de la División de Lectura Digital de Sony, dijo que la compañía quiere una versión inalámbrica del lector, pero para eso ha de negociar con múltiples librerías que usan internet para vender sus libros.
