Microsoft anunció hoy que cancela la fabricación de sus teléfonos móviles “Kin”, pensados para adolescentes usuarios de redes sociales de internet, para centrarse en el Windows Phone 7.
Microsoft puso a la venta dos tipos de Kin en EE.UU. el pasado 13 de mayo valorados entre 50 y 100 dólares y tenía previsto comercializar el dispositivo en Europa en los últimos meses del año, algo que ya no se producirá.
La empresa, no obstante, continuará trabajando con el operador telefónico Verizon para despachar el inventario de “Kin” existente en EE.UU.
“Hemos tomado la decisión de centrarnos en el lanzamiento de nuestro Windows Phone 7,” afirmó Microsoft en un comunicado difundido hoy, en el que se aseguró que el equipo dedicado a Kin pasará a formar parte del personal que trabaja en el desarrollo del Windows Phone 7 (WP7), que llegará al mercado en octubre.
Según la web tecnológica Gizmodo, la decisión de Microsoft se fundamentó en las escasas ventas de”Kin”.
Desde Msnbc, medio de comunicación formado por Microsoft y NBC Universal, se calificó al “Kin” de “elefante blanco” ya que, a pesar de su funcionalidad y conexión con redes sociales de internet, las tarifas de uso eran tan altas como las de los teléfonos de alta gama pero sin ofrecer los mismos servicios.
La compañía señaló que los avances de “Kin” serán aplicados en los próximos WP7, con los que Microsoft confía en competir con el iPhone, Blackberry y otros teléfonos de los llamados “inteligentes”.
