La japonesa Toshiba anunció el miércoles que tiene como objetivo hacerse con más del 10 por ciento del mercado de baterías recargables en cinco años, con la vista puesta en un trozo importante del sector creciente pero competitivo.
El apetito por las baterías que alimentan los vehículos híbridos, híbridos enchufables y eléctricos está creciendo con rapidez, y Toshiba ha hecho del negocio una de las áreas clave para ayudar a impulsar el crecimiento de la compañía y capear el impacto de los volátiles precios de los chips.
Sin embargo, la creciente demanda también está haciendo al sector más competitivo, y Toshiba y otras japonesas, como NEC, Hitachi y Sanyo Electric, se enfrentan con la surcoreana LG y otros rivales en todo el mundo.

Toshiba comenzará a producir en masa su batería recargable SCiB (Super Charge ion Battery) en febrero de 2011, con una capacidad inicial para fabricar 500.000 células por mes. Tiene previsto doblar esa cifra para marzo de 2012.
Toshiba espera que las ventas de SCiB asciendan a 200.000 millones de yenes (unos 1.780 millones de euros) en 2015/16.
