El Tamagotchi nació en Japón de la mano de Aki Maita y fue comercializado por Bandai. Sin embargo, no sería hasta el año 1999 cuando se produjese un auténtico ‘boom’. Esta mascota pixelada en blanco y negro ha tenido hasta 37 versiones distribuidas desde su nacimiento hasta 2009. Durante estos años ha sido la mascota más adorada y más odiada, ha sufrido el contrabando y ha vivido su declive en 2001.
Como todo producto también ha sufrido sus respectivas imitaciones. Pero fueron estas imitaciones las que en más de una ocasión, salvaguardaron la economía familiar, dado el elevado precio de la mascota virtual original.
EL PITIDO DEL CARIÑO
Los niños, y no tan niños, estaban como locos con su Tamagotchi. Era la mascota "perfecta", se podía llevar a todas partes pero en vez de ladrar, maullar o piar simplemente emitía un ‘bip’. El sonido del Tamagotchi fue en el 99 lo que el tritono del Whatsapp es en la actualidad, allá por donde ibas escuchabas uno pidiendo comer, jugar o simplemente cariño. El problema era que no se podía silenciar.
Un Tamagotchi vivía entre 20 y 25 días, lo que para él eran unos 20 ó 25 años. Podían tener novios o novias y despues reproducirse. Pese a ser consciente de la corta vida de esta mascota virtual, la peor de las tragedias se producía cuando el pequeño huevo moría. Y más aún cuando lo hacía -sin saber muy bien porqué- al primer o segundo día de activarlo, cuando había recibido todo tipo de cuidados, fruto de la emoción de tener un jueguete nuevo.
Pero al tratarse de una mascota virtual, este trauma tenía fácil solución: el botón ‘Reset’. Era pulsarlo y todo volvía a empezar de nuevo. De ahí, la oportunidad de "experimentar" con la mascota.
PELÍCULAS, SERIES Y VIEDEOJUEGOS
Tal fue el ‘boom’ del Tamagotchi a finales de los 90 y principios del 2000 que este pequeño animal dió el salto al cine y a la pequeña pantalla e, incluso, a los videojuegos.
En diciembre de 2007, el Tamagotchi llegó al cine en Japón con la película ‘Tamagotchi, ¿niño perdido en el Espacio?’, además de una serie de dibujos animados. Esta serie llegaría un año más tarde a YouTube con el título ‘Let’s Go! Tamagotchi’, en ‘streaming’ en inglés y japonés, con subtítulos en siete idiomas.
En cuanto a videojuegos, el primero se desarrolló para Game Boy y y llegó al mercado japonés y estadounidense de forma simultánea, con los nombres de ‘Tamagotchi’ y ‘Game de Hakken!! Tamagotchi’ en Japón. Su jugabilidad es similar a la de las dos primeras versiones de las mascotas con forma de llavero. La segunda y tercera versión de esta plataforma sólo fueron distribuidas en Japón.
También ha llegado a Nintendo DS y Wii.
