Col. Jeru as accuser, judge and part of the sentencing of Thaksin as well as adviser to misguided Thaksin supporters! But seriously, middle class what is it? how big is it? Who do you mean? PAD supporters? Or is middle class a refrain for the opposite of the uneducated masses that you feel such disdain for? The middle class is such a broad term that it defies easy categorisation and is a way of speaking politically and avoiding real analysis of who did and did not support Thaksin. But we can probably agree that the middle class are contingent democrats at best.

Below is a link to the 2005 Asia Times article I was referred to, which offers some quite interesting insights, such as the fact that 5 planes operated out of the Hua Hin Royal Rainmaking Centre alone at that time (including an appropriately named “King Air” model (most likely a “Super King Air 350 plane)and that on the day the reporter visited, 7 10 tonnes of rainmaking chemicals were used in various formulas. Considering that at that time, “40-60 cloud seeding flights” were operating per day, I wonder if any research has been conducted into the environmental impacts of these vast quantities of chemicals raining down on the nation from the atmosphere. Is it totally benign or are there chronic or acute ecological or human health impacts resulting, when used on a regular and intensive scale, as around Hua Hin? The Wikipedia page links and evidence seem inconclusive, but at least show there has been some research in US and Australia, so I wonder if there has been any similar dedicated research conducted in Thailand specifically?

      >The argument that the richest 20% quintile group has risen at the expense of the rest does not necessarily lead to the conclusion that it’s an economic issue because the richest 20% quintile group in other countries generates what economists call “the trickle down effect” in the distribution of wealth. The graphs on wealth distribution include all sources including the trickle down effect already.>I am skeptical about Warr’s argument that economic reasons are responsible for the Red Shirts’ crisis.Wealth disparities have a long history of generating discontent and conflict. Why would Thailand be any different ?

The Canadian legislation differs considerably but concerned WA archaeoloigsts might be interested to know about the BC situation:This (discontinuation of lists of conslutants) happened in British Columbia ca. 20 years ago and was a catalyst leading to formation of the BC Assoc of Professional Consulting Archaeologists (BCAPCA) which recently attempted (unsuccessfully) to broaden its membership by dropping “Consulting” from its name and membership eligibility requirements. At first (pre-internet) they hired someone (not a consultant, no conflicts of interest) to maintain a list of consultants who had to be members to be on the list. Now, it’s on their website (with a disclaimer). Many of the archaeological consultants in BC belong to the BCAPA but not all. It is not required. Those who mainly work at/via universities & museums do not; those who have their own contacts with clients do not; those who had issues with the organizational structure of BCAPA hovered on the sidelines and mainly do their own thing. However, I do not know that the BCAPA is a viable model for WA: Because (in addition to the work of maintaining yet another organization) in BC, every archaeologists who does fieldwork (survey, assessments, mointoring, excavations, data recovery whatever) has to obtain a permit from the BC Archaeology Branch (equivalent to SHPO), a separate permit for each project, and the permit applicaation requires a proposal (=research or treatment plan) and demonstration that the applicant meets minimum qualifications. (Thus, if a client retains an unqualified person, a permit would not be forthcoming and the fieldwork could not proceed). The permit process applies only to land in provincial jurisdiction which inlcudes all private property as well as provincially owned/managed land and which and is most of the province. The permit process means that the BC gvmt archaeologists rule on whether the archaeologist is qualified (and whether their proposed work is appropriate) and subsequently review the report before approving land alteration by xxx. At least that’s how it’s supposed to work.
