Intel y otras empresas preparan una nueva versión de la tecnología USB, diez veces más rápida, añadiendo acoplamientos de fibra óptica al cobre tradicional.
Intel junto a otros promotores como Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments, NEC y NXP lanzarán las especificaciones de USB 3.0 en la primera mitad de 2008, informó Pat Gelsinger, responsable de la división digital de Intel.
Gelsinger explicó que normalmente transcurren uno o dos años entre la finalización de las especificaciones y la disponibilidad de la tecnología , por lo que esperaba que estuviera disponible en 2009, aunque ya trabajan con un prototipo que fue mostrado en el Intel Developed Forum.
La actual versión 2.0 tiene una transferencia máxima de 480 megabits por segundo y el más rápido IEEE 1394 “FireWire” alcanza los 800 megabits. La nueva tecnología alcanzaría 4,8 gigabits según la información.USB 3.0 ofrecerá una gran eficiencia energética y será retro compatible por lo que se podrán “pinchar” dispositivos anteriores con USB 2.0.
