El fabricante de computadoras Dell dijo que su Tablet PC Streak podrá usarse también como teléfono móvil y tendrá una cámara para videoconferencias, unas características que se espera que le ayuden a competir contra el iPad de Apple.
El miniordenador o Tablet PC, de cinco pulgadas (12,7 centímetros) se estrenará en Reino Unido el próximo mes entre usuarios de la compañía móvil O2, filial de Telefónica, y en Carphone Warehouse.
Dell tiene aún que anunciar el precio de Streak, que según dijo aparecerá en Estados Unidos durante el verano.
La compañía dio a conocer oficialmente el Streak el martes, pero su presidente ejecutivo, Michael Dell, había mostrado la tecnología con que contaba el computador en una rueda de prensa hace dos semanas en San Francisco.
Dell se convertirá en el primer fabricante de electrónica en desafiar al iPad de 9,7 pulgadas (24,6 centímetros) con un dispositivo que usa el sistema operativo de Android de Google, que comúnmente se encuentra en los llamados teléfonos inteligentes.
“Es portátil y móvil. Puedes llevarlo en el bolsillo”, aseguró el analista de IDC Will Stofega, quien ha probado el dispositivo. “Es interesante e infinitamente útil”, añadió.
En detalle
Las semejanzas entre el tablet de Dell y el de Apple son nulas. Su pantalla es mucho más pequeña, pero tiene a su favor que incorpora la tecnología 3G de serie y que su capacidad de almacenamiento puede ampliarse fácilmente a través de tarjetas micro-SD hasta los 32 GB.
Estas son sus principales características
Se trata de un dispositivo compacto, con una pantalla sensible al tacto de tan solo cinco pulgadas en diagonal, que funciona con el sistema operativo Android 2.2.
Además, tiene conectividad inalámbrica Bluetooth (para transferencia de datos y archivos) y a Internet por medio de redes de telefonía móvil de tercera generación (3G) y redes locales (WiFi).
También incorpora Google Maps con navegación y visualización de calles, cámara de cinco megapíxeles, 2 GB de disco duro y memoria expandible mediante tarjeta micro-SD hasta 32 GB.
Esto alcanzaría para almacenar 32 películas, 32.000 fotografía o 16.000 canciones.
Opera con un procesador Qualcomm y chipset Snapdragon (para comunicar los componentes del equipo).
En el caso de redes de 3G puede conectarse con servicios de datos de hasta 7 Mbps con tecnología HSDPA. También puede funcionar con redes 2.5G con GSM/GPRS/EDGE.
Android está ganando terreno al iPhone en el mercado de los teléfonos inteligentes, pero no está claro si Google y Dell serán capaces de alcanzar a Apple en el mercado del Tablet PC.
